Workers: On May Day Start Turning up the Heat!
On May Day 2016 most trade unions in Britain – especially the large ones such as UNITE, UNISON, GMB – are useless at defending the pay and conditions of their members. Many of us earn less in real terms than we did before the financial crisis in 2008 and have had our pension rights and terms of employment whittled away.
SO WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Growing numbers of low paid workers have given up on the mainstream trade unions and are doing their own thing – and winning!
Cleaners and porters at Sotheby’s luxury auction house got fed up with being ripped offon National Minimum Wage pay. They formed their own branch of grassroots trade union United Voices of the World (UVW) and took up the fight. They have won the London Living Wage of £9.15 per hour, sick pay and safer working conditions.
These workers have shown the way forward.
Another new, grassroots union is Independent Workers of Great Britain who are mobilising cycle couriers in London. Some exploited employees in fast food outlets have also got organised using alternative union Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). They too have won some victories.
Cleaners at Topshop – owned by billionaire tax dodger Philip Green – are fighting to bepaid the London Living Wage. They have joined UVW and the contract cleaning firm hit back by sacking some of the employees. This has made the workers more determined to fight Topshop and WIN.
Many of the workers getting organised outside of the main trade unions are immigrants, especially women. As so often in the past, it is the most oppressed and exploited workers who are taking the lead for the whole of the international working class.
Red Attack is the Bulletin of Revolutionary Praxis.
People in Britain know that capitalism is no good but few can see a way forward to a better society. It is essential to generate interest in and attachment to revolutionary Marxism in Britain. To achieve this aim we are spreading knowledge of the revolutionary outlook of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism among the working class and middle strata in Britain.
A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another.
Demonstrations in France against anti-labour legislation, April 2016
The only viable way forward is revolutionary struggle to achieve communism, a classless and stateless society on a world scale where people do not oppress and exploit each other and where we live in harmony with our natural environment. When Revolutionary Praxis has won over a sufficient number of comrades and developed the revolutionary programme we will transform ourselves into the revolutionary party in Britain. This can happen only if you join with us in the struggle against capitalism and for revolution. The hour is late. Join us now!
BUILD THE REVOLUTIONARY PARTY!
